Journey by car to Kappl
Here is how you can safely and simply reach Kappl in Tyrol by car. Please pay attention to the information on motorways in Austria and on any winter equipment that may be required. (Winter tyres are required by law in Austria between November and March)
Arrival from Germany:
From the S16, the Arlbergschnellstraße, drive off at exit Pians and continue about 15 kilometres on the Silvretta Bundesstraße (B188) in the direction of Kappl. There are three ways to reach the S16 in Tyrol:
- Approach Kappl from the German motorways A7 or A95, heading south. The route takes you over the Fernpassbundesstraße (B179), via Imst and Landeck to the Austrian motorway A12 and on to the S16 (Arlbergschnellstraße) to Pians.
- Drive the German A93 motorway in the direction of Innsbruck. The Austrian Inntal Autobahn (A12) takes you via Kufstein, Innsbruck and Landeck to the S16, the Arlbergschnellstraße (dual carriageway) and continues to Pians.
- Drive the German A96 motorway in the direction of Lindau to the Austrian motorway A14. Follow this motorway towards Bregenz, Feldkirch and through the Arlbergtunnel to the S16 and continue to Pians. In the summer you can also exit the motorway in Bludenz and continue on the Silvretta Hochalpenstraße to Kappl.
Arrival from Italy:
From the S16 road, the Arlbergschnellstraße, (dual carriageway) turn off at the exit for Pians and stay on the Silvretta Bundesstraße (B188) for about 15 kilometres in the direction of Kappl. Two ways bring you to the S16 in Tyrol:
- Drive towards the north on the motorway A22 over the Brennerpass to the Austrian motorway A13. In Innsbruck, turn towards Bregenz onto the motorway A12 and continue on the S16 to Pians.
- Drive north on the SS40, over the Reschen Pass to B180, heading to Austria. The route takes you via Nauders and Landeck to the S16 in the direction of Bregenz, continuing to Pians.
Arrival from Switzerland:
Approach Austria on the motorway A3 towards Feldkirch, or the motorway A1 towards Lustenau and Dornbirn. In Austria, follow the motorway A14 towards Innsbruck. Follow this motorway through the Arlbergtunnel onto the S16 and continue to Pians. Exit the S16 in Pians and continue for about 15 kilometres on the Silvretta Bundesstraße (B188) in the direction of Kappl. In the summer you can also exit the motorway in Bludenz and continue on the Silvretta Hochalpenstraße to Kappl.

Please remember that toll vignettes are mandatory for travel on all Austrian motorway (Autobahn) and expressway (Schnellstrasse) routes. If you should get caught without this mandatory sticker, you will be subject to severe penalties. You can purchase vignettes with validities of ten days, two months or an entire year at petrol stations and tobacco kiosks.
For the arrival by car especially during the winter months, winter tires and adequate winter equipment are mandatory for your vehicle to ensure a safe arrival.
