PRESS RELEASE

ISCHGL IRONBIKE - FOR CALVES OF STEEL

The 14th Ironbike in Ischgl is considered to be one of the most difficult mountain bike races of the year. On 2 August 2008, the chase is on for the prize of 20,000 Euros.

Demanding tracks, almost vertical climbs and rapid descents - those choosing the Ischgl Ironbike's "Large Circuit" covering 79 kilometres and an altitude difference of 3,800 metres must be prepared for a challenge. Top stars from international racing teams also test their limits at the legendary Ischgl Ironbike on 2 August 2008 in the Silvretta Mountainbike Arena. Together with leisure riders and amateurs, they compete in different classes for the prize of altogether 20,000 Euros. This makes the Ischgl Ironbike the mountain bike marathon with the highest prize money in Europe. Around 1,000 starters take part each year on this punishing round circuit between Ischgl and Samnaun in Switzerland. There are three tracks with differing lengths and routes to ensure a tailor-made challenge for every participant.

No mercy for the calves
79 kilometres and an altitude difference of 3,820 metres, steep ascents to a height of over 2,800 metres and tricky single trails await the rider on the classic Ironbike route - it's not called the Ischgl Ironbike for nothing. There are two alternatives for the others: The small circuit covering 27 kilometres and an altitude difference of 700 metres is possible for any ambitioned leisure rider who wants to get a taste for the competition. It's somewhat more serious on the middle circuit: The climb up to Idalp is steep and draining, the further ascent to Vellilscharte demands the rest, even from well-trained riders. The descent that follows passes through the Velliltal and the exhausting climbs are soon forgotten on the Super-Trail, designed by the mountain bike legend Hans Rey: 1,200 metres altitude difference pure downhill fun right down to the finish in Ischgl. The middle circuit has 48 kilometres and an altitude difference of 2,050 meters altogether. The event weekend around the Ischgl Ironbike has a lot more on offer: The Ischgl Palio, an exciting sprint through the town centre, takes place on the previous day. Here, the spectators can get to know the top stars of mountain biking close up. The fastest riders are determined in two knockout rounds, before they compete in the final for a prize of 2,400 Euros.
