Motorbike-test centre in Tyrol’s Paznaun is starting up
BMW, Ducati, KTM and Triumph support "High-Bike im Paznaun"
The Alps are considered the ultimate paradise for bikers. Now there is an important novelty coming out of there: June 4th, 2011, sees the start of the "High-Bike im Paznaun": During this promotion, backed by the Paznaun - Ischgl Tourism Association in Tyrol and supported by numerous premium partners from the motorbike sector, bikers (and those who want to become bikers) can henceforth extensively test bikes in the course of their alpine holidays. The testing centre, located in the well-known winter sports resort of Ischgl, has about 30 different models by the four major European bike manufacturers – BMW, Ducati, KTM and Triumph – available for all-day test tours. The promotion "High-Bike im Paznaun", which is also supported by Daytona, Metzeler, Motorex, Pirelli, Rukka and Schuberth, is aimed at long-time cooperation and intended to be steadily expanded in the coming years.
The basic idea of this promotion is to combine two extraordinary leisure experiences: Alpine holidays and motorbike testing. "An Alpine holiday in Tyrol is ideal for extensively sampling the driving qualities of a new motorbike on wonderful mountain roads", Andreas Steibl believes. The tourism association manager considers the approximately 30 kilometre long Paznaun in the west of Tyrol a very suitable location for the cross-brand test centre: "In the catchment area of the day trips that can be embarked upon from here, there are nearly 30 mountain passes and numerous beautiful Alpine roads, allowing every rider to experience which motorbike particularly suits him or her".
Nearly the entire range of BMW, Ducati, KTM and Triumph 2011 street bike models is available for the extensive test tours, except for extreme sports and off-road models. Almost all of the test bikes provided directly by the manufacturers are equipped with ABS. For each overnight stay in one of the four localities of the Paznaun – See, Kappl, Ischgl and Galtür – guests can book a test day to go with it. The price per test day varies from 50 to 80 Euros, depending on the value of the bike. This includes third-party vehicle insurance and comprehensive insurance, with 500 Euros to be deposited to cover any damages.
Of course, holiday guests arriving on their own motorbikes will take centre stage at the "High-Bike im Paznaun" promotion. But in order to help those guests who do not have their own motorbike gear go on an extensive holiday test trip, the necessary items – in various sizes and optimally maintained – can be rented. Helmets are provided by Schuberth, suits with Gore-Tex membrane by Rukka. Boots by Daytona are also available. And those who do not have their own gloves can rent or buy Rukka products in the shop. In addition to a deposit, a cleaning fee is charged for all equipment and gear. We were able to enlist the services of Motorex as an additional partner; the Swissmaintenance and lubricant products specialist supplies all products required for bike and gear maintenance.
Information about "High-Bike im Paznaun" can be found on the internet on the homepages of the Paznaun-Ischgl Tourism Association, www.ischgl.com, www.galtuer.com, as well as at www.kappl-see.com. Here you can also find a complete list of all vehicles available. Your dream-bike can be booked up to seven days before your arrival date. Participation requires the testers to accept that their data is forwarded to the industry partners involved; further use of the personal data is excluded.
"High-Bike im Paznaun" begins on 4th June 2001 and runs until 3rd October this year. The test centre is situated in the local area of Ischgl on A-road 188, where all motorbikes are parked in a nearly 40-metre long hall, with glass panes on the front. Upon completion of the necessary formalities (test contract, paying the deposit), the bikes can be picked up here daily between 8:00 and 12:00 and returned between 16:30 and 18:30. Participation requires holding a valid class A driving licence.
Every tester will receive a roadbook listing ten tours of various distances and level of difficulty, ranging from 200 to 300 kilometres. Some hotel businesses even offer guided tours for "High-Bike-Testers"; information on this is available directly from the hotels and B&Bs. The "High-Bike im Paznaun" test territory covers West Tyrol, parts of Switzerland and south Bavaria as well as part of South Tyrol, the highest point being the Stilfser Joch at 2,750 metres and with 48 hairpin bends, and that on the western ascent to the pass alone.
Most test motorbikes have no top cases or panniers; daypacks are available free of charge. The test bikes are cleaned and inspected by a mechanic daily; they are only handed out in absolutely impeccable, mint condition. To this end, we set up a special service unit, where the bikes are cleaned and professionally maintained each evening. Bikers who do not holiday in one of the four resorts of the Paznaun can also participate in the "High-Bike im Paznaun" promotion; in this case, the test fee is higher.
