Johann Ladner was born in Kappl in 1707. His artistic career began with an apprenticeship as a mason, stonemason and monumental mason. After the apprenticeship, he went off on his travels. From 1737, Ladner lived in Kappl, carving his pieces almost exclusively from wood. The “Kalvarienberg” in Mathon is one of his early works (1742). Starting in 1750, he produced a series of famous pieces, which can be marvelled at in Kappl and the surrounding area: Kappl (“Grabmal Schmid”, “Kappler Juden”, “Kreuzigungsgruppe” (on the exterior wall of the church in Ischgl) (“Kalvarienberg”, “Pieta”) and Galtür (altars in the parish church).
Countless individual figures in the Paznaun Valley and the Vorarlberger Oberland (local name the highlands of Vorarlberg) as well as the “Kalvarienberg” in Samnaun complete the extensive works of this unique artist.
