Sled Race in Austria
Tobogganing in Tyrol
The “Zipfl” bobsled – also known as the “mini-bob” - was invented in 1970. However, races with this sled have only been conducted seriously since 1999.
The idea for the Zipfl bobsled came from the large coal shovels that used to be used to slide down the mountain side. Nowadays, the bobsled is no longer made of metal but of plastic. Attached to the back-free sitting area there is a handle. This handle is placed between the legs and has three objectives:
- a handle to hold
- a handlebar (supported by the legs to steer)
- a break
As a result of its characteristic build, the Zipfl bobsled is agile and can be steered with precision.
Since 1999, there have been a variety of Zipfl bobsled races in the Tyrolean alps. The most famous are:
- Zipfl bobsled Cross
- Downhill
- Speed
In the Zipfl bobsled Cross, four athletes start simultaneously, and have to master a selective obstacle course. In the other 2 races, speed is at the forefront of skills. The current world record is just over 157 km/h (according to the Guinness Book of Records).
The annual Zipfl bob sled race in Tyrol in Kappl is naturally suited for the whole family. The programme includes:
- Free Training
- Races for families and children
Borrowing a Zipfl bobsled is free on the day of the race, as well as a ski pass for children aged under 16. The centre for the event is at the Sunny Mountain Restaurant. Registration, issuance of starting numbers and the award ceremonies, afterwards, all take place there. Please note, that helmets are mandatory and ski boots are prohibited for all participants.
